Very cool first nights for the buds in Saumur-Champigny
The year 2026 is characterized by an exceptionally early bud break. The buds are beginning to burst, making them particularly susceptible to frost.
Frost in April is not uncommon. However, at this time of year, the vines are usually at a less advanced stage of development, and therefore less vulnerable. This year, the situation requires increased vigilance.
A quick anticipation by the winemakers
As early as last week, the winegrowers anticipated the risk by repositioning their Weenat frost sensors in the most exposed plots and reactivating the alerts on the application, in anticipation of the coolest nights.
In some areas of Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, temperatures dropped as low as -2,5°C.
Protections adapted to the stage of the vine
Fortunately, the frost-prone plots are pruned and bent last to delay bud break. At this still early stage, the buds can withstand temperatures as low as -3°C.
For the most at-risk areas, protective systems such as frost protection towers are installed. These must be used sparingly, hence the importance of sensors and alerts, which allow for a timely response.
Result: no major damage to date
However, vigilance remains essential. There are still a few weeks to go before the Ice Saints: the risk period is still long.
